Background

Because of its fluctuating nature, an energy supply that is based on renewable energy sources is more dependent on buffer capacity to accommodate excess electricity, which can be activated at times of electricity shortage.

It is likely that the usage of renewable electricity can be more effective if the links between the three systems electricity network, gas network and heat supply can be utilised.

This research project therefore deals with the analysis of the required storage and balancing measures, the identification of interactions between the three systems electricity network, gas network and heat supply and the establishment of indications for their systematic optimisation.

The following schematic shows the possible interactions between the three energy sectors as well as some possible energy conversion technologies.
